On my phone, I can’t download apps. This Google Play error 491 appears on my ZTE ZMAX Pro whenever I tap Install. How can I fix Google Play error 491?

The error in Google Play 491 occurred not only on ZTE devices, but also on Samsung, HTC, Nexus and other Android phones/tablets. The error prevents users from downloading, installing, updating apps or a specific app. Here are some tricks to correct the error in Google Play 491.

Why Does Google Play Error Code 491 Mean?

The error code for Google Play 491 seems to have come from nowhere. Although there are no specific explanations for the error, there are some possible reasons for the 491 error on your Android phone in Google Play:

  • The Google Play apps have corrupted data;
  • There is something wrong with your sign-in Google account;
  • There are some settings that are incompatible with Google Play app in your device.

Regardless of the reason, the following solutions can be used to fix Google Play Store error 491.

How to Fix Google Play Error 491

Solution 1: Restart Android Phone/Tablet

When you see your Android phone or tablet error 491, the first thing you should do is restart the device. To restart your phone or tablet, press the power button long. In some cases, after rebooting the phone or tablet, the 491 error would be gone.

Solution 2: Clear Google Play Caches & Data

  1. Go to Settings > Apps/Applications;
  2. Scroll down to locate Google Play Service and Google Play Store;
  3. Choose Google Play Service/Google Play Store;
  4. Click Clear Data and Clear Cache.

Tip: If Google Service Framework is installed on your Android device, you may also want to clear its data and caches.

You can now go back to Google Play Store and see if apps/games can be installed or downloaded. If error 491 persists after clearing caches and data from Google Play Service and Google Play Store, move on to the next trick.

Solution 3: Uninstall Updates for Google Play Apps

You can uninstall updates for Google Play Store and Google Play Service to fix the error.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Uninstall Updates
  2. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Service > Uninstall Updates.
  3. You can then restart your device for the change to take effect.

Solution 4: Remove Google Account

If the error is caused by your Google account 491, you can correct the error by removing Google from your Android phone / tablet. After restarting the device, you can add the account back to the Google Play Store and see if you can normally download, install and update apps / games.

  • Go to the Settings > Accounts;
  • Choose your Google Account and select “Remove Account”;
  • After the account has been removed from your device, reboot the device;
  • Once the device restarts, go to Settings > Account to add your Google account back.

After the above steps, many users fixed error 491. And for some users, when they switch to a new Google account, the error code 491 is gone.

Solution 5: Reset App Preference

If error code 491 still appears, reset the app preference in the following steps on your Android device:

  1. Go to Settings > App/Applications;
  2. Tap three dot icon and choose Reset app preferences;
  3. Tap Reset Apps.

This resets your app preferences, but does not wipe out any of your phone data.

Solution 6: Delete APN with Proxy/Port Set

If you have set up proxy/port in a APN, deleting the APN could help to stop the error 491.

  1. Go to Settings > Network Connection > > More networks > Mobile networks;
  2. Click Access Point Names;
  3. Tap the access points and check if they have proxy/port set;
  4. If the proxy/port is set, delete the APN.

Solution 7: Download APK

Firstly, enable downloading apps from Internet:

  1. Go to Settings > Security.
  2. Toggle on the button of Unknown source.
  3. This will enable the device to install apps that are downloaded outside of Google Play Store.

Download APK from the Internet from Google Play Store and install the app on your device.

Solution 8: Factory Reset Android Device

If the above methods fail to fix the 491 error, you can reset your Android phone / tablet factory. The reset will delete all data and settings on your device, so complete backup of your device before resetting is important.

  1. Backup your phone/tablet;
  2. Go to Settings > Backup & Reset;
  3. Tap Factory data reset.
