Fix Hulu Error Code 301

The error messages aren’t always helpful when Hulu stops working. One of the most common error messages indicates that there has been a playback failure. This message is usually seen on streaming devices such as Roku and Fire TV, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and Vizio, LG and others smart televisions.

Hulu provides you with an error code in some cases that can help you identify the problem. If that doesn’t happen, and all you see is the message of the playback failure, you have to start with the basics, such as checking your internet connection, and move on.

What Causes Hulu Playback Errors?

Hulu playback errors occur if the app on your device cannot communicate with the Hulu servers or if the Hulu servers cannot provide a video stream.

Hulu playback errors are usually caused by problems with your device, software or home network and can be fixed by following the following instructions.

Hulu playback errors are caused by problems at the end of Hulu in other cases. What this means is that if you see a playback error when you try to watch a Hulu video and everything checks your end well, Hulu itself may have a problem.

If a playback error is caused by a problem with Hulu itself, all you can do is let them know about the problem and then wait until the problem is fixed.

If you want to eliminate problems that you can actually fix, here are the things you can do if you have a Hulu playback error on your streaming device:

  1. Check the speed of your internet connection for streaming.
    1. If your Internet speed drops too low, Hulu videos can stutter, buffer or not play at all.
    2. Regular Hulu videos require 3.0Mbps.
    3. Hulu With Live TV requires 8.0Mbps.
    4. If you’re not sure how fast your internet is, check out our internet speed testing guide.
  2. Restart your device and equipment for networking.
    1. Completely shut down, power off and disconnect your streaming device and network equipment.
    2. Leave your equipment unplugged for about one minute.
    3. Plug the equipment back in, turn it on and check if the playback error in Hulu persists.
  3. Switch to a wired connection if possible.
    1. Try to connect your streaming device with an ethernet cable to your router or modem.
    2. If the playback error disappears, either use a wired connection to stream or move your wireless router closer to the Hulu device.
  4. Disconnect other devices from your network.
    1. If you have many computers, smartphones, game consoles and other network devices, disconnect them.
    2. Secure your network, and make sure nobody is connected to it without your knowledge.
    3. If the playback error disappears, you may want to buy a multi-band router or router to prioritize streaming traffic.
  1. Check your router settings.
    1. If your router allows you to prioritize certain types of traffic or devices, set the device that you are trying to watch Hulu as a priority.
    2. Try changing the domain name server (DNS) settings in your router.
    3. If you are unsure what DNS is or how to change it, check out our complete guide to the most popular routers to change DNS.

If you still have a Hulu playback error after all these fixes have been tried, it may help to delete or reset the Hulu app on your device. Your device can also check or test its internet connection in some cases.
